Our Aluminum Powder Coating Process

Our aluminum powder coating process begins with a consultation to gain a clear understanding of your project goals. Your dedicated sales representative will discuss your specifications, explain our services and help you create a cost-effective solution that meets your needs. We can tailor our services to include:

  • Blasting: Our 84″W x 84″H x 264″L blasting cabinet removes debris and materials from your surface’s coating and creates microscopic scoring to develop a stronger bond with your primer or powder coat. For aluminum products, we use milder abrasives designed to treat your surfaces without causing damage.
  • Pretreatment: Our eight-stage pretreatment system cleans residues from your surfaces for a smooth application, applies a chrome-free seal to protect from corrosion, uses silane technology to strengthen your bond and much more. This system is eco-friendly and meets AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 standards.
  • Priming: Primer adds additional protection to your products and will provide up to four times greater protection from weather and wear when used for exterior applications. We use a specialized non-zinc primer designed to add resilience and develop stronger bonds.
  • Coating: After masking your surfaces, we apply your choice of powder in the texture, millage and color you want. We have many aluminum coating options. We can produce high-volume orders of high-quality products with exceptional turnaround times using a combined total of six systems, including batch setups and automatic lines.

We implement comprehensive quality control testing procedures to ensure every aluminum powder coat we apply meets AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 standards. Our process minimizes the risk of potential issues like peeling, chalking, bubbling, sagging and uneven patches.

This system is also eco-friendly because it reduces waste, uses fewer chemicals than wet paint and emits minimal amounts of volatile organic compounds.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aluminum Powder Coating

Yes. Powder coating is one of the most popular finishing processes for aluminum due to its numerous advantages.

With the right maintenance and care, a powder coating will typically last between 15 and 20 years. However, depending on the type of coating and treatment process, this length of time can easily stretch to over 40 years. Powder coatings are extremely resilient additions to aluminum materials and provide durable protection against weather, chemicals, corrosion and much more.

Yes, you can successfully paint over powder coatings. While these coatings are highly durable, professionals often paint over their coatings to touch up their materials after noticing scratches, fading or stains that can occur over time.

Spraying and brushing thin layers are viable strategies to apply paint evenly across a surface. Before getting started, cleaning the area to remove dirt, grease, moisture and other contaminants is a good idea. For products with chipping, you may need to use a sandblaster to prepare the area.

The combination of increased durability, corrosion protection and improved appearance makes powder coating an excellent choice for aluminum products.
