AAMA Powder Coating

Strict Industry Standards

Architects and builders need powder coating that meets demanding performance requirements, and the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) sets the bar with strict standards for the powder coating industry. The AAMA, which recently combined with the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) to become the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA), is a trade organization that promotes a higher standard of quality to ensure coated products meet the most stringent design specifications. In architectural and building applications, these standards are essential, and partnering with a provider committed to meeting them will ensure your powder coating job meets your expectations.

AAMA Testing

The AAMA puts powder coats through a series of tests to determine durability after exposure to a wide range of harsh conditions. These include tests in a controlled environment and prolonged exposure to severe Florida weather for real-world evaluation after exposure to salt, hail, rain and ultraviolet light. AAMA powder coating specifications and testing also includes checking for cure, hardness and adhesion. These tests also evaluate coatings for resistance to:

  • Impact
  • Abrasion
  • Humidity
  • Corrosion
  • Chemicals

Application facilities must meet additional standards for verification. The AAMA powder coating process must include steps for adequate surface preparation for a complete and even coat during application. Appearance is also a factor, and facilities must produce an aesthetically pleasing finished product that is free from visible imperfections at a minimum distance of nine feet.

AAMA Verifications

Powder manufacturers and application facilities that pass AAMA testing are awarded verification, with the appropriate verification level based on the testing results. At Keystone Koating, we are a certified applicator of powder manufactured in compliance with AAMA 2604 and 2605 standards. We maintain two high-volume facilities that can deliver the highest levels of quality for surface preparation and coating.

Our AAMA Verifications Include:

AAMA 2604 powder coating verification is for high-performance powders. After lab testing, coatings submitted for AAMA 2604 verification are subjected to five consecutive years of exposure to the harsh Florida climate. After a minimum of 3000 hours of humidity exposure and 3000 hours of exposure to corrosive salt spray, AAMA experts review the panels to evaluate for erosion, quality, color retention and more.

AAMA 2605 powder coating is the highest rating attainable and is reserved for powders with a superior performance rating. The most recent guidelines require test panels to withstand 10 years of exposure to the elements with minimal wear. Under AAMA 2605 17A guidelines, panels must meet a minimum of 2000 hours of corrosion exposure and 4000 hours of resistance in humid environments.
