What Is Clear Powder Coating?

A clear powder coat is exactly what it sounds like — a powder coat that produces a clear finish, allowing the material’s colors to show through. This powder coat is only in thermosetting powder for strong clarity and chip resistance, resulting in extended durability.

We can apply clear powder coats over another powder coat or directly to your substrate. They’re available in various finishes, including high-gloss, semi-gloss, flat, and matte, to help you achieve the look and level of protection you desire for your product.

Why Add a Clear Coat?

Like all powder coats, a clear coat can provide many benefits to boost the durability and lifespan of your products. These protective coatings increase ultraviolet (UV) and corrosion resistance while preserving the layers beneath. Though a standard, opaque finish also provides these protections, adding a clear powder coating may help to further increase your product’s longevity.

Clear coats can also enhance initial finishes by providing a greater depth to colored finishes or adding some gloss to an otherwise flat color. Layering a high-gloss clear powder coat over a glossy, colorful powder coat achieves an unbeatably rich, shiny finish.

Common Applications for Clear Powder Coats

Applying a clear powder coat directly to your substrate material is a great way to add a layer of protection and your preferred level of gloss, just like an opaque powder coat would. However, unlike standard powder coats, a clear coat keeps your substrate’s natural color visible.

When you apply a clear powder coat over an existing powder coat, the second finish provides an added layer of protection that keeps your material and its first powder coat in pristine condition. For metallic silver or chrome powder coats, we recommend adding a clear coat to protect your finish. The clear coat prevents moisture exposure so that the metal flakes don’t oxidize over time or lose their shine.

As mentioned above, sometimes clear powder coats enhance the appearance of your finish. Adding your preferred clear coat can help you achieve your desired appearance through shine, contrast, and clarity. Some clear coats will also make your finished surface easier to clean or more fingerprint-resistant.
